Course overview

Tailored for those who wish to pursue a career within the Photography or Digital Media areas of the Creative Industries. Developing your skills in composition, lighting, and post-production while working on a wide array of projects.

This course is ideal if you are interested in making and communicating through images and want to develop your skills in photography and image editing.

Experienced lecturers, who are also practitioners will teach you, and the course will give you a broad practical overview of various photographic genres and diverse areas of work. These will include studio and location image making and image editing. You will prepare work for print and digital use, for display online, in books and exhibitions. Taught sessions will give you opportunity to use studio and workshop facilities, and to enjoy a wide variety of learning experiences such as lectures, guest speakers, workshops, trips, active learning, and personal research. You will become proficient in the use of industry standard Adobe software, including Bridge, InDesign, and Photoshop. Opportunities to learn Illustrator and Premiere Pro will also be provided.

Alongside this you will also work to build your knowledge of the theoretical aspects of Photography and visual communication, developing the knowledge, skills, and techniques required to make your photographs communicate your ideas effectively to others.

During the 2nd year of the course, you will work to build a body of work which will aid your progression on the next stage of your photographic career. This will involve the development of a professional portfolio of your work to demonstrate your skills, interests, and experience in photography, which will be vital for entry into university, application for paid employment and attracting clients in a freelance capacity.

You will need a minimum of four or more high grades at GCSE in subjects relevant to the course you’d like to study, including maths and/or English Language at grade 4 or above. You will also need a portfolio of images to discuss with us at your interview.

This is a hands on, practical qualification and you will be assessed throughout the programme at key assessment points. This may involve research, practical work, design and storyboards, digital presentations and contextual studies notes and reports. All assessments will be graded Pass, Merit or Distinction.
