Bricklaying Student Crowned Young Builder of the Year
22 October 2025
Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group (NSCG) student Dom Bromley has been named Young Builder of the Year at the annual Youthbuild UK Awards.
The awards celebrate the achievements of young people who have overcome personal challenges to succeed in training or employment within the construction industry.
Dom, who is studying Level 2 Bricklaying at Newcastle College, was nominated by his lecturers in recognition of his resilience, determination and passion for learning, despite facing significant personal barriers.
The awards ceremony took place on 15 October at the House of Commons in London, where Dom was joined by his lecturers and local MPs Adam Jogee and David Williams.
Since joining NSCG, Dom has successfully completed his Level 1 Diploma in Bricklaying and progressed to Level 2. He has undertaken work experience at Porthill Cricket Club as part of a college project and successfully secured part-time labouring work with local builders. Over the summer, he also competed in SkillBuild, the UK’s largest and longest-running construction skills competition.
Talking about his award and the advice he would give others, Dom said: “Keep your head down, focus on what you want in life and talk to the people who can support you. Don’t hold back, people do care and they will help.”
Robbie Legg, Curriculum Leader for Brickwork, said: “Dom’s journey hasn’t been easy, but he’s never let that stop him. He’s worked hard, supported others, and now he’s not only won Young Builder of the Year but he has also secured an apprenticeship and a future in the trade. I’m proud of what he’s achieved and where he’s heading.”
