NSCG Maths and Life Skills Tutor Recognised in the Festival of Learning Awards 2024

Min Charlesworth, Maths and Life Skills tutor for adult learning at NSCG, has been nominated in the Festival of Learning Awards 2024.

Nominated for the 'Tutor Award' for her outstanding work supporting communities across Staffordshire, Min has been noted as being a driving force of innovative student-led learning. She currently inspires learners studying on NSCG's Multiply numeracy project whilst also working extensively with grass roots organisations, employers, charities, schools and local stakeholders. Min works tirelessly to support, empower and instil confidence into some of the most hard to reach adults from underrepresented and disadvantaged communities through the power of mathematics.

Min is able to bring maths alive through fun, real world community led topics, numeracy challenges and games. She helps care leavers, females in protection, immigrants and also adults facing homelessness to explore independent living, whilst developing their budgeting and cooking skills, for example. Working closely with organisations such as Beam, Eagle House, Women's Aid, adults with disabilities and ESOL learners to name but a few, Min encourages positivity and lifelong learning to help people to transform their lives.

Nominating Min for her award, Navarda Garside, Assistant Director of Curriculum - Head of Adult Learning said: "Min is a caring and passionate teacher who is committed to excellence. delivers inspirational learning, and sees the potential in everyone. Her lessons and community engagement unlocks imagination, nurtures confidence and demystifies the perceptions of adult learning. Min is exceptionally dedicated to helping learners with significant barriers to learning and her caring, supportive and flexible approach has made a profound impact on her students' lives. As a team, we could not be prouder of Min for being nominated in these national awards."

Speaking on her nomination, Min said: "Having faced my own difficult challenges, I can relate to the daily struggles that communities face. Recognising the importance of continuously upskilling myself, I use a holistic approach to teaching. I have the privilege of instructing mathematics and life skills to a diverse range of adults, each with unique backgrounds and challenges. Witnessing the positive impact of education on each of my learners facing different circumstances fuels my passion. By fostering an inclusive learning space, I aim to contribute to personal growth, confidence and skills development, recognising that education can be a powerful catalyst for positive change within a vibrant and diverse community. Learning does not stop after formal schooling, and my passion is to make a positive difference to every adult, their community and their families."
