Esports students take on Royal Signals Regiment
26 November 2025
Students from Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group (NSCG) recently took on the British Army’s Royal Signal Regiment in an action-packed two-day Esports and military showcase event.
Exercise Mercury Nexum brought together students from NSCG’s Uniformed Protective Services (UPS) and Esports courses, taking place across Newcastle College and the brand new Institute of Technology in Stafford.
Army personnel were based around the Newcastle Campus throughout the two days, sharing insight into life within the Royal Signals and discussing the technology that underpins military communication and operations.
Across both mornings, students joined the Royal Signals for a series of interactive demonstrations and military manoeuvres, designed to showcase the Army’s cutting-edge communication systems and digital equipment. Learners were given hands-on experience using specialist technology, typically reserved for trained personnel.
In the afternoons, the focus turned to competition as the Royal Signals Esports Team went head-to-head with NSCG’s own home teams.
The results were:
Overwatch: NSCG 0-4 Army
Overwatch 2: NSCG 2-1 Army
Rocket League: NSCG 2-0 Army
Counter Strike 2: NSCG 13-6 Army
Valorant: NSCG 9-13 Army
