IoT Hosts Sixth Form Association Leadership Development Programme

On Tuesday 21 and Wednesday 22 April, NSCG hosted over 40 delegates attending the latest Sixth Form Association Development Programme module at the Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire Institute of Technology.
The event marked Module 4 of the programme, 'Leading the Business', and brought together members from sixth form colleges from around the country to explore the complex challenges of leadership in today’s education landscape. With increasing pressures around funding, accountability, and strategic growth, the day focused on equipping delegates with the tools and insights needed to lead with clarity and confidence.
The programme was led by NSCG's Principal and CEO Craig Hodgson, Chief Financial and Operations Officer Debbie Torjussen, and Assistant Principal for Information Services Kevin Wintle. Together, they delivered a series of thought-provoking sessions addressing some of the most pressing issues facing the sector.
Key themes included how principals can effectively align institutional strategy with financial planning and long-term vision, as well as a deeper dive into the mechanics of college finance and business operations. Delegates also explored the critical relationship between funding, data, and curriculum design, examining how informed decision-making can ensure both sustainability and high-quality student outcomes.
Alongside the keynote sessions, participants took part in a range of interactive workshops designed to build practical skills. These sessions covered financial fluency, budget setting, and understanding complex funding streams, as well as stakeholder management and governance. The hands-on approach encouraged collaboration and knowledge-sharing, allowing attendees to apply concepts in real-world scenarios and learn from one another’s experiences.
Georgina Barnard, Vice Principal for the Institute of Technology and Higher Education, also provided delegates with an overview of the Institute’s development journey. Her presentation highlighted the significant investment behind the facility and the strategic vision that continues to shape its growth and impact.
The event concluded with a guided tour of the IoT's cutting-edge facilities, offering attendees a first-hand look at the innovative learning environments available to students and employers. The tour showcased how modern, industry-designed space combined with strong employer partnerships play a vital role in shaping curriculum delivery, boosting student engagement, and enhancing overall learner experience.
