Newcastle College Celebrates Student Success with September 'Student of the Month' Awards

Each month Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group hold a ‘Student of the Month’ awards presentation that highlights and recognises the individual effort, progress and dedication of students who go above and beyond throughout the year.

This month saw the first round of nominees of the academic year collect their awards. The presentations included a number of inspirational stories from staff about their nominees, including: selfless volunteer work, overcoming personal challenges, going above and beyond on their chosen courses, exemplary attendance and hard work.

Ben Haywood - Apprentice of the Month

After a challenging school experience, Ben took charge of his future during his time in the Foundation Department. Passionate about becoming a chef, he secured his own work experience at Feasted, a local fine dining experience. His eagerness to learn and warm personality quickly impressed the team, leading to an apprenticeship offer.

Under the guidance of founder Cris and the Feasted team, Ben has thrived—creating fabulous dishes like "The Blue Pigeon of Spode Tower" and cooking for notable guests such as Andi Oliver, Britain in Bloom judges, and council leaders at both Feasted and Stock in Newcastle.

Everyone is incredibly proud of Ben's achievements, and this nomination celebrates his hard work and bright future ahead!

Warren Whitehurst - Vocational Studies Award

Warren has demonstrated remarkable enthusiasm and determination both in college and during his placement at UHNM, where he volunteers at least one day a week. Impressively, he has already completed the 100 mandatory placement hours required for the academic year and shows no signs of slowing down.

Warren’s dedication to becoming a paramedic is clear, as he volunteers his services as a trained first aider in and around Stoke-on-Trent. Despite overcoming personal challenges and moving into independent living, Warren has progressed from Level 2 to Level 3, maintaining an exceptional work ethic. Congratulations, Warren, on this well-deserved recognition!

Wura Akolade - Skills & Technology Award

Wura's dedication to her T-Level course and future career is outstanding. Over the summer, Wura volunteered at the Alice Charity in Fenton, designing a garden space for their staff to enjoy. Using skills from her course, she surveyed the space, created scaled designs in AutoCAD, and developed plans for the College’s joinery students to bring to life.

Wura also collaborated on a live project in Wolverhampton, offering insightful feedback and design ideas to architects in public pitches. Outside college, she balances work at Alton Towers, playing the keyboard, gym sessions, and even sewing her own dresses. Her initiative and work ethic have impressed everyone. Congratulations, Wura!

Congratulations to all our students on their outstanding achievements and the admirable commitment shown to their studies.
