Amber Smit on playing for the England Colleges Hockey team

HOCKEY WEB 29

Join us for a chat with BTEC Sport and Exercise Science student Amber Smit, as she shares her experience playing for the England Colleges Hockey Team.

My favourite thing about studying at NSCG has been getting involved with different opportunities, like the Academy of Sport.

Amber Smit, Level 3 BTEC Sport and Exercise Science

How did you first get into hockey?

I was first introduced to hockey at primary school, when we learnt how to play during PE lessons. I immediately wanted to play more, so I joined my local club and have been playing ever since.

How do you like to prepare for an upcoming match?

I always get my kit sorted the night before and try to just get a good night’s sleep. On the run up, I like to keep myself busy so I’m not worrying or overthinking about the match the next day. I always like to have the same breakfast of pancakes and fruit in the morning too.

How do you find balancing your training with your studies?

It can sometimes be challenging to fit it all in and to have the time to focus on everything, however the support I get from college makes it much easier.

Do you have a sporting icon or idol? Who inspires you?

Alex Danson, who played as a forward for England and Great Britain. She has won two Olympic medals, as well as a Bronze World Cup place, several Commonwealth Games medals and has also received an MBE for services to hockey.

What are your long term goals and career plans?

I’m planning on hopefully getting a place at the University of Birmingham to study Sport and Exercise Health Science. After that, I would like to do my Masters in Physiotherapy.

What’s your favourite thing about studying at NSCG?

My favourite thing about studying at NSCG has been being able to meet new people and getting involved with different opportunities, like the Academy of Sport.
