Clare Seadon, Level 4 AAT Professional Diploma in Accounting

Tell us about your journey back into education as an adult learner.

I initially signed up for the Step Up to Level 2 AAT Accounting course before progressing onto Level 2 and then Level 3. I’m now studying the Level 4 AAT Professional Diploma in Accounting part-time around my job as an Estate Agent at Dale and Collins Estate Agents, which is a family business.

What was your motivation to study an AAT course?

I’ve always been interested in accounts, but never took the step to achieve the recognised qualifications. I have worked in my current role for 19 years

You’ve worked your way through the AAT Accounting levels at NSCG. Looking back how did you feel on your very first day back in 2023?

I felt very apprehensive on my first day on thee Step Up to Level 2 Accounting. Going back into education as an older learner was a big deal.

How have you found studying at college alongside your work commitments?

Time management can be the most challenging part of studying part-time around work and home commitments. Adjusting to the change can be hard at first, but being organised is definitely the key to getting through the assignments and making sure the workload doesn’t become overwhelming. I tend to do my assignments at the weekend around looking after my grandchildren, so keeping on top of the work is really important.

Describe the key skills you’ve developed from studying an AAT course.

Throughout the different levels, I’ve been able to enhance my knowledge of accounting to a greater depth. Developing my skills in Bookkeeping, Financial and Management Accounting and Ethical Procedures has given me a broad knowledge of the subject area.

How have your tutors helped you to succeed and progress through the AAT qualifications?

The accounting tutors at NSCG are fantastic and are always available to offer extra help and advice when it’s required. They understand the challenges of having busy lives and make studying insightful and engaging.

Back in the workplace, how has studying helped you to grow in your role?

Having the knowledge of how to calculate Capital Gains Tax has been invaluable. I’ve also developed a working knowledge of property income, inheritance tax and compliance which enhance my role as an estate agent. Within the business, we work closely with local landlords so I am able to offer guidance and knowledge to them too.

How do you connect with other learners within the classroom?

A large proportion of the learners on my day course are accounting apprentices so they are using their knowledge on a daily basis, whereas I'm learning everything from scratch. As an older learner, it's good to hear all about the different processes and workloads of everyone too.

Exams vs Assignments, what would you choose?

Assignments for sure! I just learn better through assignments and coursework.

Looking back on your time at NSCG, what would your advice be to anyone thinking of studying an accounting course?

My time at NSCG has given me the drive and ambition to achieve goals I never thought I was capable of. If I can do it at the age of 50, then anyone can! It’s never too late too late to learn a new skill and I would encourage anyone at an age to take that leap. The satisfaction you get from achieving something for yourself is worth the effort, challenging and rewarding times.

What's next for you?

On completion of the course, I will stay in my current role, but adding value from my developed knowledge will help me to add value and knowledge to the family business.
