Marie O'Riordan, Curriculum Leader for Business

Tell us about yourself and your journey to working at NSCG

I’m originally from Birmingham and I studied BA Hons Business Studies at Sheffield Hallam University in 2004. Since then, I have worked in education for 15 years as a Teacher of Business, Finance, IT and Economics. I have taught all across the West Midlands in various roles including as a teacher, curriculum leader, quality officer and exams officer. I recently got back into teaching after a short break, starting at NSCG in summer 2024 and have enjoyed the journey so far.

Who or what first inspired you to go into teaching?

I completed a Sandwich Degree at Sheffield Hallam University between 2004 and 2008. During my placement year, I worked for a small business that provided IT training and outsourced HR services to SMEs (Small and medium-sized enterprises). As part of this role, I delivered training to employees on Microsoft software, including Excel, Outlook and Word.

What do you love most about your job?

I love the variety the role provides. Although I follow a set weekly timetable, no two days are ever the same. Teaching brings with it a range of interesting characters, each with their own challenges, and I love being a safe and positive role model to students and supporting them through their challenges and celebrating their successes.

Can you tell us about the course that you teach?

I teach on the Level 3 BTEC Business Studies qualification, which consists of a range of units that are both internally and externally assessed. Students enjoy the variety the course offers, covering a wide range of topics including Marketing, Finance and Human Resources, as well as Visual Merchandising, Customer Service and Debt Management. I recently introduced the Debt Management unit to Year 2 students who are on the verge of entering adulthood. The aim is to equip them with the knowledge and understanding needed to make more informed financial decisions.

What has been your proudest moment so far?

My proudest moment so far at NSCG was the student outcomes from the January 2025 exams for Marketing and Business Decision Making. The students did fabulously in their exams and were very pleased with their results. Another moment I have been proud of during my career was winning £3,000 for my previous college for the Finance Teacher of the Year award.

What has been the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

Do the right thing – even when no one’s watching

What book, tv show or film is your favourite at the minute?

I have been reading a book by Mel Robbins called Let Them, which has helped change my mindset on what you can and cannot control in life. I am also a fan of the book Atomic Habits, which helps to motivate me. I also enjoy game shows such as Deal or No Deal, The 1% Club and The Traitors.

Can you tell us a random/interesting fact about yourself?

I ran five half marathons between 2021–2023 and raised £600 for charity, including: Potters ‘Arf, Tittesworth Half, Stafford Half, Chester Half, Antrim Coast Half Marathon. My fastest time was 1:56.
