ADRIANA CONSTANTINESCU

Mum of one, Adriana moved to the UK from Romania and loves to learn to develop her skills for the workplace.

Here, Adriana chats to us about why she chose to study at NSCG and how she's finding returning to education as an adult learner.

I chose to study at NSCG to improve my English for both professional and personal reasons and I'm already seeing positive changes in my life.

Adriana Constantinescu, ESOL and Introduction to Accounting Assistant

Did you enjoy studying when you were younger?

I grew up in Romania and studied accounting in high school which gave me a strong foundation in organisation and attention to detail. In 2012, I graduated with a degree in Geography which is where my analytical and research skills come from. I consider that my education has helped me to become disciplined and motivated to keep on learning.

When I moved to the UK, I wanted to continue my studies.

Why did you decide to study an ESOL course at NSCG?

I wanted to improve my English for both personal and professional reasons. My background is in accounting and geography, but I realised that having strong English language skills are essential for work, study and everyday communication. Learning motivates me to grow and meet new people.

What types of roles have you worked in more recently?

When I settled in the UK, I chose to work for a retail company. Over time, I have worked in different departments from preparing orders for customers to the training department which involves recruitment, health and safety and guidance.

Stepping into Keele in Town on your first day. How did you feel?

I felt enthusiastic and relaxed. I was open to learning, listening and getting involved, The class is small and friendly so that really helped. My tutor also helped us to settle in as she is very supportive.

What have you enjoyed most so far?

Learning with others at Keele in Town is great. The class is very diverse and it's wonderful to share life experiences. My friends in the class encourage me to speak which is helping me to get better with English.

How has studying at Keele in Town changed your life so far?

Studying in this lovely space has made a big difference in my life. It has improved my confidence especially with speaking and understanding English in everyday situations and at work. I already feel more comfortable communicating with people from different backgrounds which help me to build everyday relationships.

The ESOL course is also helping me with my studies on the Introduction to Accounting course which is something I am also studying at Newcastle College.

What's next for you?

Once I complete this level, I want to continue through the levels. I'm also studying the Introduction to Accounting Assistant course so I am still deciding which pathway to take.

What would your advice me to anyone considering an ESOL course?

I would say sign up for the course, but make sure you participate in the activities during the class time. Don't be afraid to make mistakes and don't give up!

There are lots of courses at college. I have chosen ESOL and accounting around my part-time employment, so study as much as you can so that you can choose with is your strongest subject to maybe develop your career in.
