Jess Robertson, Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Mental Health First Aid and Mental Health Advocacy in the Workplace

How did you hear about the online Level 2 Mental Health Awareness course?

Navarda Garside from NSCG is one of our local academy council members and discussed the course with us. As a school, we are always looking for ways to strengthen our wellbeing provision. Positive mental health amongst children, parents and staff is an area that we are always seeking to maintain.

What were you hoping to gain from the course when you signed up?

On a personal level, I wanted to study the course to gain an insight of mental health and how this understanding can be used to enhance support within school. I was also hoping that by other colleagues completing this course it would mean that we have an increased awareness and understanding of mental health therefore increasing capacity to support others within school. Upskilling staff in this area enables us to really drive our wellbeing aims forwards and support all stakeholders as much as possible.

Have you found the online format of the course easy to access and complete?

Yes, the course was easy to access via the portal and all assessment material was clear.

How relevant has the course content been in your day-to-day role as an Assistant Principal?

Throughout the course I was able to reflect and consider how I would be able to use the information to support others within the workplace. It has enabled me to become more informed and aware of maintaining my own positive mental health in addition to supporting those around me with an informed perspective. At a leadership level, I feel more equipped with the knowledge needed to make informed strategic decisions considering possible impact on others and putting wellbeing at the forefront of all that we do.

Do you feel that the course has supported your professional development and awareness of the important topic of mental health?

The course has meant that I am much more informed around mental health. I am now able to identify different types of mental health, consider signs and symptoms and better support others within the workplace. It has enabled me to contribute to whole school decisions whilst being aware of the importance of maintaining positive mental health in the workplace.

Did you access any support or guidance from your tutor? If so, how did this help you to complete the course?

Initial guidance and feedback was appreciated as then I became aware of the structure needed for the answers and the types of responses.

How did you find balancing the course alongside your work and personal commitments?

The online calendar tool and reminders of deadlines were really useful in terms of planning out time. Myself and my colleagues were able to complete in our own time alongside work commitments.

Will you be signing up for any other online courses from our current programme?

Myself and another colleague are hoping to access further courses to support our own professional development.

Would you recommend this online course to other teaching professionals?

I would definitely recommend this course to other staff working in schools. It gives an opportunity to further explore and develop a depth of knowledge into the important area of mental health. It is able to be completed alongside work commitments and gives some useful strategies to consider when supporting staff within school. It enables mental health to be prioritised in school and enables mental health first aiders to be in place to signpost and support with any early indicators of poor mental health. It has enhanced my overall understanding of mental health and enabled me to become and more informed and empathetic leader.
