Course overview

Study our ESOL Beginners English course to learn and develop essential English vocabulary and phrases for everyday life and work. This short course includes reading, speaking, listening, and writing skills to prepare you for work a variety of everyday tasks through role play and learning. 


This ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) course is designed for learners who want to improve their basic English skills. The course will also help improve your confidence when communicating in everyday life situations. During the course, you will:

  • Learn essential English vocabulary and phrases
  • Practice everyday conversations
  • Improve listening skills
  • Read simple texts and understand main ideas
  • Write short sentences and paragraphs

The course combines reading, speaking, listening, and writing skills each week to prepare you for work a variety of everyday tasks through role play and peer learning. Your teacher will support you throughout the course, but you need to be committed and motivated to succeed.

To support your progress, you will also need to complete an additional 2 hours of self-study each week through homework and online resources.

*The daytime course will run from our Newcastle-under-Lyme town centre venue, Keele In Town at 53 Ironmarket, ST5 1PE.

This course is perfect for non-native English speakers who want to develop their confidence with the English language and are not ready to take a qualification. Our goal is to help you develop basic English skills in a friendly and supportive environment. You should have:

  • Some basic English skills (speaking, reading, writing, and listening)

Before starting the course you will be invited to attend a 1:1 meeting with your teacher to look at your reading, speaking, listening and writing skills.

There are no formal exams in this course. However, you and your teacher will track your progress through an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and various activities. These activities will include:

  • Discussions and note-taking
  • Group activities and role-plays
  • Real-life scenarios
  • One-on-one assessments and feedback

After completing the course, you could move on to an ESOL qualification at an appropriate level.
