Course overview
Are you looking to build your confidence using computers and improve your English at the same time? Our ESOL Computers and Digital Skills course is the perfect place to start. Designed specifically for adults whose first language isn’t English, this friendly and supportive course introduces you to the basics of using digital devices—whether that’s a smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop. Whether you’ve never used a computer before or feel unsure about going online safely, our experienced ESOL teacher will guide you every step of the way.
This gentle introduction is taught by a professional ESOL teacher who understands the challenges of learning a new language and studying a vocational subject. The course will help you feel more confident using digital devices and the English language, as well as preparing you to progress on to a full Essential Digital Skills qualification at the right level for you.
You’ll explore how to:
- Turn on a device and safely enter or update account information (like passwords)
- Use controls such as a mouse, keyboard, or touchscreen
- Change settings to make your device easier to use (for example, bigger text or screen brightness)
- Use the home screen and connect to the internet safely
- Open and use apps
- Try out basic Microsoft tools like Word and Excel
You’ll learn how to use a mouse or touchscreen, set up passwords, connect to Wi-Fi, and try out everyday tools like Word and Excel—all while building your digital vocabulary and communication skills in English.
Our ESOL Computers and Digital Skills course is designed for adults where English is a second language and are new to using digital devices like tablets, laptops, smartphones or work computers. It’s especially helpful if you feel nervous using technology or are unsure about how to stay safe online when browsing the internet or shopping.
Before you start the course, we will invite to attend a welcome event to ensure your level of English is appropriate for the course.
There are no formal assessments, just progress made through learning. Together, we’ll track your progress on an individual learning plan, and your tutor will provide you with regular feedback to help you grow.
Once you finish this course and complete some short tasks, you can move on to a Level Entry 3 or Level 1 Essential Digital Skills course or move on to other ESOL courses tailored to your level and needs.
This course is FREE to adults aged 19+ who have been a UK/EU Resident for 3 years or more.
