Course overview
This Hair & Beauty Sector course offers learners foundational knowledge and practical skills in hairdressing and beauty treatments. It prepares students for entry-level roles or further training by covering health and safety, customer service, and basic techniques in a dynamic, creative industry.
The Level 1 Hair & Beauty programme is designed for 16–18-year-olds interested in beginning a career in the hair and beauty industry, with a focus on developing creative skills alongside communication and customer service abilities. This course provides a broad introduction to both hair and beauty, helping students decide on a specialist pathway in preparation for Level 2 study. Successful students may pursue careers as professional Hair Stylists, Makeup Artists, Nail Technicians, or Barbers.
The course covers four mandatory theory-based units:
- Introduction to the Hair and Beauty Sector
- Presenting a Professional Image in a Salon
- Following Health and Safety in the Salon
- Working with Others
Optional practical units include:
- Styling Women’s and Men’s Hair
- Plaiting and Twisting Hair
- Basic Make-up Application
- Themed Face Painting
- Nail Art
- Basic Manicure and Pedicure Treatments
- Temporary Hair Colouring
- Creating Hair and Beauty Images
- Salon Reception Duties.
Learning combines theory, live demonstrations, and practical assignments using industry-standard products like Wella, with hands-on experience in fully equipped salons. Students’ progress is supported by experienced tutors with professional industry backgrounds, and work experience opportunities with local employers across Derbyshire and Staffordshire provide valuable real-world exposure.

Grade 1 or above at GCSE in English and maths.
Your progress will be through a combination of methods assessed during the course. This will include externally set examinations and controlled assessments along with assignments, practical activities and project work. In addition to your tutor’s assessment you will develop the ability to carry out your own evaluation of your success. Having provided evidence in these ways to show that you are competent in each unit you will gain a Pass, Merit or Distinction grade.

After completing Level 1, students typically progress onto Level 2 qualifications to further develop their skills and knowledge, preparing them for employment, apprenticeships, or continued education in their chosen field.
This course is free for anyone aged 16 – 18.
College Maintenance Allowance (CMA): Anyone with a gross household income under £35,000 can receive financial support to cover college related costs such as transport, meals, course equipment and uniform.
