If you're thinking about working in a school but not sure where to begin, our short and friendly Introduction to Working as a Teaching Assistant course is the perfect first step. 

Designed for those with little or no experience, this course will help you explore what a teaching assistant does, the types of schools they work in, and the everyday tasks involved. Through practical activities and real-life scenarios, you’ll build your confidence in supporting reading, writing and maths in the classroom, and learn about the key personal skills needed, like patience, communication and teamwork. 

This introductory course is ideal for anyone considering a career as a teaching assistant in a school setting. It offers a practical overview of the role and responsibilities of a teaching assistant, helping you to understand what the job involves and whether it’s the right path for you. Through engaging activities and real-world examples, you’ll start to explore how teaching assistants support pupils, teachers, and the wider school community.

You will:

You do not need any experience working in schools, just a willingness to learn and explore the important role a teaching assistant plays in schools. 

There are no formal assessments, just supportive learning and activities in class. You will work through an individual learning plan and receive regular feedback from your tutor.

After this course, you may choose to: 

  • Progress to a Level 1 or 2 Teaching Assistant course
  • Join an English or Maths course to build your course literacy and numeracy.

This course is FREE to adults aged 19+ who have been a UK/EU Resident for 3 years or more.

What else do I need to know?

Please note that courses run subject to minimum viable class sizes. 

All materials will be provided and there will be practical activities which will include painting, crafts and producing activities for children to learn from.

Our daytime classes take place in welcoming community venues close to the college, offering a convenient and supportive learning environment. You’ll have the opportunity to meet like-minded adults who are also looking to develop their skills, achieve their ambitions, and take the next steps in their careers.
