This qualification covers a range of key subject areas that provide learners with the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to care for and educate children aged between 0 and 11 years 11 months old.

What else do I need to know?
This qualification has a minimum requirement of 120 work placement hours. However, we recommend learners undertake at least 200 work placement hours.

As you will be working with children you will need to have a clearance form which is called a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) in order to ensure the safety of the vulnerable children and young adults that you will come into contact with. Please discuss this with your interviewing tutor.

You will need 4 GCSEs at grade 3 or above.

This qualification is made up of 6 units assessed through assignments. There are no external exams included in this qualification.

Two placements are required to be completed, one in a nursery setting and one in a school with a placement visit in each. There is also a mandatory
Professional Skills Record (PSR) which must be completed during the work placement.

This qualification allows progression onto Level 3 Early Years Educator qualifications and other Level 3 qualifications relating to Childcare, Health and Social Care or Supporting Teaching and Learning.

Learners can also progress in the workplace in job roles, such as:

  • Nursery Assistant
  • Classroom Assistant
  • Preschool Assistant.

College Maintenance Allowance (CMA): Anyone with a household income under £26,000 can receive up to £20 per week financial support to help pay for travel and meals and meet the costs of essential trips, books, stationery and equipment.
