Are you thinking about volunteering but not sure where to begin? This short, supportive course is a great first step to help you understand what volunteering involves and how it can support your personal and career goals. Whether you're looking to give something back, gain experience, or boost your confidence, this course will help you explore the opportunities available and how volunteering can fit into your future plans. You'll learn about different types of roles, the skills needed, and how to find the right opportunity for you.
Our friendly, 10-hour course is the perfect introduction for anyone interested in giving their time, learning new skills, and making a difference in their community. You’ll explore what volunteering involves, the types of roles available, and how it can help you grow in confidence, meet new people, and even open doors to future employment.
With support from an experienced tutor, you’ll:
- Learn what volunteering is and the benefits it offers
- Explore different volunteering roles and what’s involved
- Understand the responsibilities and expectations of volunteers
- Think about your own interests and strengths
- Explore local volunteering opportunities, through visits and how to apply
- Build confidence in communicating and working with others
You’ll also begin to plan your next steps and feel more prepared to start a volunteering role that’s right for you.
There are no formal entry requirements. All you need is an interest in helping others and a willingness to learn.
There are no formal assessments, just an interest in getting ready to volunteer. Together we will record your progress on an individual learning plan and your teacher will provide you with regular feedback.

After completing this course, you may wish to:
- Start a local volunteering placement
- Join a Level 1 course in a sector that interests you (e.g. care, retail, admin)
