GCSE English and Maths Resit Results Success

It's been an incredible morning celebrating the successes of our spectacular students who collected their GCSE resit results today.

More than 300 students who resat the GCSE English and maths papers in November have now achieved their grade 4-9 which is a fantastic result and testament to their hard work and the dedication of the department staff.

Level 3 Health and Social care student KT Frost admitted she didn't think she would pass, saying: "I can't believe it. I'm so happy I passed my English. I still have to pass my maths but I can focus on that now.

"The support from my teachers has been amazing so I'm very thankful."

Leila Ali Mroivili came to Newcastle College to study Level 3 Art from Alsager High School. Helping her to revise was her sister Miriam who works as a Learning Support Assistant at the College. She said: "During our revision sessions for English I noticed that Leila showed some signs of dyslexia so Student Services were able to arrange the tests to get the diagnosis.

"Unfortunately, we weren't able to get the extra time and support in place before she took the exam in November so we weren't sure how she'd do. To find out she's passed is just amazing, I'm so proud!"

Leila added: "I am so happy! I wasn't sure what to expect but I have worked so hard, setting aside 6 hours a week to do practise papers with my sister acting as my tutor. I couldn't have done it without her. I am just so happy."

Level 3 Acting student Millie Oliver was over the moon having achieved a grade 5 in her English GCSE resit. She said: "The teaching staff have been very helpful and I'm so happy with my result."

Level 2 Information Technology student Ayman Kizito also praised the support given by staff, saying: "The tutors gave us lots of support in class which helped with revision and online study sessions too."

Lots of students we spoke to stressed the importance of revising, including Level 3 Health and Social Care student Libby Jolley who created a revision timetable. She said: "I took extra classes that were put on to help us revise and I also made a timetable to help so I knew what I had to revise and when. I also made sure I stuck to it because I was determined to pass. I'm so relieved I have."

A huge congratulations to everyone who got the grades they wanted today – it's great to see that your hard work has paid off.
