The day featured two women’s-only walks, with staff and students encouraged to take part. In addition, staff participated in a 100-mile cycling challenge, tying the event to the upcoming 100th anniversary of Stoke-on-Trent and honouring Meg’s passion for football and her dedication to coaching children throughout the city.

Meg studied a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport (Development, Coaching and Fitness) course and alongside her main study programme, was a talented footballer and second team captain of the College’s Andy Griffin Football Academy (AGFA) ladies team.

She loved football and gave up her own time outside of college to coach at grass roots level, and had a keen interest in gaining a Level 1 Football Coaching qualification.

The events aimed to raise awareness of violence against women and girls, while also raising over £1,500 for Our Space, a local charity selected by Meg’s family. Our Space supports children, young people and adults with disabilities, offering social and recreational activities for them and their families.

In the evening, both past and present AGFA students came together for a special football match with Meg’s family in attendance, ending 2-0 to the current AGFA team. A raffle was also held by Meg’s family to raise additional funds in her memory and to further support the work of Our Space.

Speaking about the memorial, Todd Bailey, NSCG Curriculum Manager for Sport and Public Services, said: “It is important that each year we identify an occasion to remember Meg and celebrate her life with those close to her. By using sport as our platform, we can also reach the wider women’s football community to raise awareness and highlight key services around women’s safety in Staffordshire.

“Seeing the players from Meg’s age group mix and interact with our current AGFA ladies team is wonderful, it is a true reflection of how Meg will be remembered and the legacy she leaves behind at NSCG.”
