As an extension of their studies learners carried out an investigation into an area of their choice. The project involved them researching and collecting data before then presenting and discussing their findings on a project stall at a presentation event.

Todd Bailey, Curriculum Manager for Sport and Public Services at NSCG said, “This event highlights the scope and capacity for further research in sports and exercise science. The students have put so much time and effort into their research developing key skills that will prepare them for careers and higher education should that be their next step. I’d like to congratulate them all on their work and recognise the sound advice and guidance from their teaching team.”

Held in the College’s Gordan Banks Sports Centre the event followed a browse and question format, with investigation topics ranging from ‘An Investigation into Music’s Impact on Weight’ to ‘The Effect of Sleep on Performance and Mental Health in Student Athletes’.

Level 3 BTEC Sport Science students Nieve Milner and Amelia Bailey-Matthews, who investigated ‘How the Menstrual Cycle Impacts Women in Sport’, told us, “The research has helped us to understand ourselves and our own performance as well as other people. It’s really important to raise awareness of the differences between men and women, particularly with male coaches, as women are more prone to certain injuries at certain stages of their cycle.”

With plans to head to university to study physiotherapy for Amelia, and a university exploration of Nieve’s mind, there’s no doubt this investigation will form a vital foundation for their future studies.
