Newcastle College honours outstanding students in monthly awards

Each month Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group hold a ‘Student of the Month’ awards presentation that highlights and recognises the individual effort, progress and dedication of students who go above and beyond throughout the year.

This month, we’re joined by our incredible November winners and they were selected for a variety of reasons, from standing out in their studies, their inspiring ability to overcome challenges and their commitment to supporting their local community. We want to say a huge thank you to David Williams MP, for joining us and presenting the awards.

Dominic Bromley - Award for the Faculty of Skills and Technology

Dom has shown exceptional resilience, dedication and progress since joining NSCG. Starting on the Bricklaying Diploma, he has overcome significant personal challenges and shown outstanding commitment to building a better future.

Over the past year, Dom took part in the Porthill Cricket Club community build, represented NSCG at SkillBuild 2025 and earned national recognition as Youth Builder of the Year, as well as a nomination for Apprentice of the Year. Now progressing through his apprenticeship, Dom continues to lead by example. His employer praises his work ethic, positivity and willingness to take on every challenge. He’s even organising a charity boxing event for Band of Builders!

Ella Beech - Apprentice of the Month Award 

Ella is a remarkable apprentice, known for her impressive dedication and leadership. From securing her apprenticeship with DPC Accountants after a school careers fair to becoming Employee of the Quarter, she continues to exceed expectations with her professionalism, client care and teamwork.

Ella has also taken on mentoring responsibilities, supporting new apprentices and creating a positive learning environment. As a West Midlands Apprenticeship Ambassador, she regularly speaks at events, helping young people discover the value of apprenticeships and challenging gender stereotypes in accountancy. With high Distinction grades in her AAT studies and ambitions to progress to ACA or ACCA, Ella is already shaping a bright future, even completing charitable outreach work in South Africa.

Hannah Endall - Award for the Faculty of Vocational Studies

Hannah has impressed the Faculty of Vocational Studies for her strong work ethic and impressive academic achievements. She consistently goes above and beyond in her Health and Social Care studies, demonstrating real commitment to doing her very best every single day.

With excellent attendance, punctuality and a proactive approach to learning, Hannah always meets deadlines, participates fully in lessons and seeks extra challenges to stretch herself further. She is also a supportive and thoughtful peer, regularly helping others during group work and setting a brilliant example through her respectful, mature attitude. Hannah’s determination and personal qualities shine through, all essential skills for a successful future in the health and social care sector. Keep up the fantastic work, Hannah!

Alex Quinn Eden - Apprentice of the Month Award

Alex has shown impressive professionalism as a Level 4 Engineering apprentice. Now in his second year, he has shown real ownership of his apprenticeship standard, producing high-quality evidence, demonstrating strong initiative and consistently exceeding expectations.

Achieving Distinctions across every HNC unit in his first year, Alex continues to shine at Senior Aerospace. He quickly mastered the CAD system, creating detailed facility layouts and proposing improvements to support new equipment. He has also tackled complex engineering challenges, from redesigning failed air-management components to managing customer enquiries and handling new product orders with accuracy and independence. Driven, capable and quietly determined, Alex is already making a significant impact and a bright future in engineering certainly awaits him.

Marika Oakes - Award for the Faculty of Sixth Form Studies

Marika has an admirable passion for biomedical engineering. A consistently high achiever, she produces outstanding work across her A Level subjects and shows a genuine enthusiasm for exploring the overlap between maths, science and medical innovation.

Her EPQ project showcased this brilliantly. Marika designed and built a 3D-printed prosthetic hand for below-elbow amputees, learning new CAD and 3D-printing skills and presenting a thoughtful, research-driven design that balanced cost, comfort and functionality. Alongside her studies, she shines on the court too, as a key player in NSCG’s unbeaten first-team Netball squad and a talented Badminton athlete.

Kayleigh Dean - Award for the Faculty of English and Maths

Kayleigh has shown incredible progress, determination and compassion. She began her NSCG journey in 2023 on the Foundation programme, achieving a Distinction and securing a grade 4 in GCSE English. 

Her dedication has continued to shine and she is now excelling on the Level 3 Public Services course, achieving an impressive baseline result and showing real commitment to her GCSE maths resit, where she is predicted a grade 4. Kayleigh’s ambition is to become a paramedic, driven by her desire to support others with care and empathy, qualities she shows every day in class. 

Ruby Smith - Award for the Faculty of Vocational Studies

Ruby has been selected this award, thanks to her outstanding commitment, positivity and passion for Hairdressing. With 100% attendance and consistently high-quality work, she sets an exceptional standard on her Level 1 programme. Her dedication is clear in every task she completes, and her tutors describe her as a model student with a brilliant attitude.

Ruby’s professionalism has also made a real impact in the salon. Her work placement manager shared glowing feedback, recognising her talent and pride in her work. She regularly brings in clients for assessments, embraces feedback and always pushes herself to improve. A bright future in the hairdressing industry awaits her.

Lucy Shore - Award for the Faculty of Professional Studies

Lucy is being recognised for her remarkable determination and impressive achievements. After initially finding college life and the commute from Crewe challenging, she made the brave decision to return to NSCG this September and has truly flourished. She has shown maturity, resilience and growing confidence in her academic work, contributing positively in class and embracing every opportunity.

Alongside this, Lucy is an outstanding athlete, representing the College Swim Team at regional and national level. Her relay teams placed first and second in the West Midlands Championships, earning a spot at the Nationals where they achieved top-20 finishes.

Jake Elms - Award for the Faculty of Professional Studies

Jake’s journey at NSCG is truly extraordinary. Joining the Level 2 Business Enterprise course in September, he faced significant challenges linked to symptoms of Cerebral Palsy and other health conditions, yet his determination has been nothing short of inspirational. 

From an anxious first day, he has grown in confidence and capability, achieving 99% attendance, perfect punctuality and outstanding grades, including a Distinction in his first assessment. His positivity, resilience and commitment to his studies uplift everyone around him, and he has become a valued and hardworking member of the group.
