Students and staff from Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group (NSCG) took to the track at Brands Hatch over the weekend, marking an exciting debut in the 2026 Student Motorsport Competition.
Representing Stafford College, the newly formed NSCG Racing team launched its two-car entry into the competition, part of the BRSCC Nankang Tyre CityCar Cup Championship. The season opener, held on April 11th–12th, saw the team compete against established colleges and universities from across the UK.
Led by Motorsport Engineering Lecturer Andy Stevens, the team has spent the past year preparing for its first competitive season, building knowledge and experience by observing the championship during 2025.
Behind the wheel were Motorsport Engineering student Luke Sawyer and former student Jake Gittus, both bringing experience in karting and sim racing.
Following qualifying, Luke secured P26 in car #34, with Jake qualifying P35 in car #12.
In Race 1, Luke finished P22 after starting P18, while Jake delivered a consistent drive to finish P23, maintaining his starting position. Race 2 saw further progress from Luke, who moved up to P16, gaining a position from his start, while Jake again showed consistency, finishing P24.
The weekend also provided valuable experience beyond the track, with media student Aimeè-Grace Stevens capturing photography and content from the event, helping to showcase the team’s journey and achievements.
NSCG Racing enters its debut season with a focus on development, teamwork and continuous improvement, aiming to build a strong foundation for future success.
Student Motorsport founder and Competition Organiser John Paul Latham said: “It’s been a huge privilege to support another new team like NSCG. Their innovative approach shows the kind of forward-thinking that is driving the growth of the competition.”
The team will return to the track for the next round of the championship at Snetterton Circuit on 9th–10th May, as they continue to build experience and momentum throughout the 2026 season.
