NSCG Student Champion Soars at Special Olympics GB

NSCG (Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group) Stafford College student Kamal Dawelbeit recently took part in multiple events in the Special Olympics GB National Summer Games, where he won a bronze and a silver medal.
Designed to nurture and progress athletes from local competitions through to competitions at an international-level, the focus at Special Olympics GB is on providing opportunities for athletes with intellectual disabilities. Providing year-round sports training and athletic competition the non-profit organisation champions individuals of all ages and abilities.
Kamal, who has just completed his Level 2 Sport qualification and is now progressing onto the Level 3 Sport programme, took part in the games over the bank holiday weekend. More than 1,200 athletes with intellectual disabilities from across England, Scotland and Wales came together to compete culminating in the four-day, multi-sport event held at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham.
Alex Brown, Curriculum Leader for Sport & Public Services at NSCG Stafford College says: “Kamal embodies the values of determination, resilience, inclusion and excellence. Whether in the classroom or on the athletics track, he consistently demonstrates a positive attitude and a drive to succeed.
“We are immensely proud of everything Kamal has achieved and look forward to supporting him as he begins his Level 3 Sport programme while continuing to pursue his sporting ambitions.”
Kamal showcased his exceptional determination, talent and commitment as he competed in the 200m Sprint, Shot Put and Relay Team Event, and was even interviewed on BBC News as part of their coverage on the games.
Kamal says: “My experience of the games was incredible. The 200m Sprint in Friday’s quarter finals was fantastic and I came 3rd place. The Shotput was fantastic too and I came 1st place. On Saturday semi-finals I came 7th place in the 200m race, and in the Shot Put, I was 2nd place. In Sunday’s finals, I was 2nd place on the Shot Put, and in the Relay, I came 3rd place. Overall, I won 1 bronze and 1 silver medal. The atmosphere was joyful and we had great support from the coaches, our families and friends. The Alexander stadium was very special and ceremonies were motivating from the guardians of Olympic flames to the wonderful Aitch songs. I met some athletes like Thomas Young (Gold medal paralympic in Tokyo) and Adam Brownsword (Gold medallist Tennis in Berlin).
“I studied anatomy and physiology at Level 2 BTEC Sports, and I learned about muscle functions and plyometrics I need to use when sprinting. Furthermore, I did Fitness for Sports and Exercise where I learned about speed and acceleration when sprinting, and power and concentration for Shot Put. At my training in the gym, I used what I learned from Anatomy and physiology about the parts of the muscles I need to focus on.
“Throughout the year, my college tutors were encouraging me to continue training at the gym, and at the Special Olympics in Rowley Park. I was very pleased when my tutor Alex congratulated me for the achievements after he saw my interview with the Special Olympics Great Britain on BBC sports. I’m looking forward for the future competitions.”
Competing on a national stage is a fantastic accomplishment, and Kamal's dedication and perseverance have been evident throughout his sporting journey.
