NSCG students take part in UK Parliament Week with visit from local MP

T Level Business, Travel and Legal & Law students from Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group (NSCG) have been taking part in UK Parliament Week, a nationwide initiative designed to raise awareness of what Parliament is, what it does and how people can get involved in democracy.

As part of the celebrations, students were joined at the Institute of Technology (IoT) by local MP Leigh Ingham and Stafford Mayor Jenny Barron, who shared insights into their journey into politics and her experiences as a Member of Parliament and council. They also took part in a Q&A session, giving students the chance to ask questions about careers, political life and the roles in representing their communities.

The session began with an engaging presentation from teaching staff about the structure and purpose of UK Parliament, followed by a series of interactive activities and competitions designed to make learning about politics fun and accessible.

Students also had the opportunity to explore the IoT’s cutting-edge facilities, including the VR/AR immersive space, where they took a virtual reality tour of Parliament and the House of Lords, bringing Westminster to life.

Sarah Lewis, Curriculum Leader for T level Business, from NSCG said: “The event was designed to help students learn about the functions of the UK Parliament and explore the career paths of speakers who are now involved in decision-making. I’d like to thank Leigh Ingham MP and the Mayor, Councillor Jenny Baron for their time and contribution too.”

It was great to meet so many engaged, passionate young people engaging with their democracy at Stafford College.”

Councillor Jenny Baron, Mayor of Stafford, said: “It was great to be a part of today, to share my years of knowledge and experience with students in the hope of inspiring younger people into business and politics.
