Choosing to study the Foundation Degree in Education (Awarded by Staffordshire University), Sarah Hill studies part-time around her full time employment in a school setting. Here, Sarah shares her experiences with us.

The course is helping me to develop specialist skills in SEN and it's giving me the practical skills to support children in my care.

Sarah Hill, Foundation Degree in Education

How was school and college for you?

I left school with only two GCSEs because I simply could not do exams. I then resat all of my GCSEs and passed them the following year which was a relief. After that, I started my A Levels, but I soon realised that pathway wasn't for me and so I began to look for an Early Years Apprenticeship. What felt like an eternity, I finally found the perfect apprenticeship for me through NSCG and I then had the opportunity to complete the Level 2 and Level 3 Early Years Practitioner courses.  So, it's been quite the journey, but I'm so happy to be studying the Foundation Degree which I will complete in the summer.

What attracted you to the Foundation Degree in Education at NSCG?

I decided to complete the Foundation Degree at Newcastle College as it's part time and I could still work full time. It also meant that I could receive on-the-job training and practice which has definitely helped me in completing assignments on the course. I have worked in my setting for over 5 and I've done all of my courses at NSCG so it was a natural progression which suited my lifestyle.

How does the Foundation Degree help you back in your educational setting?

I am getting to apply everything I learn in college back in the classroom. I'm having the opportunity to enhance and develop my skill set which is helping me to grow professionally in education.

Describe the key skills you have developed.

Organisation, time management and working as a group has been really useful and something I can continue to work on in my career. I've developed specialist SEN skills which has been amazing.

How do your tutors inspire you to think about your future?

I'm lucky to be part of a really supportive cohort and our tutors are a massive part of that. Nothing is ever too much trouble and they are so supportive. This is what really attracted me to this course rather than moving away from home. They try and fix any problems and issues which may arise which helps to reduce any stress. Thinking about my future, I'm supported to really think about the specialist areas I'd like to work in and where I may need to focus.

The class sizes at NSCG are smaller than most universities. Has this been a positive aspect for you?

Learning in a small class is ideal as we share ideas and experiences which is just as valuable to me as the course. Class discussions are so important and everyone gets to contribute and feel valued. I also have the opportunity to discuss my assignments with my tutors to seek advice to improve where I need to.

How do you balance your studies with your day job?

As I study part-time, I'm in college for four hours a week and I roughly study two hours each night (sometimes longer), but it depends on my assignments and the commitments I have on with work and in my personal life.

How has studying a university-level course changed your life so far?

The Foundation Degree has enabled me to to develop the knowledge and confidence to move around the school setting into higher year groups. It's enhanced all aspects of my knowledge around children and how I can aid their personal development. I feel a strong and competent practitioner.

And the best part about the course so far?

Making new friends who will definitely be friends for life has been lovely.

What would your advice be to anyone thinking of studying a HE course at NSCG?

For anyone thinking of advancing their knowledge and career, I would really recommend you consider NSCG. You will get the support you need to grow in your career and more importantly, they will give you the confidence to continue to learn on completion of your chosen course.
