Jack Turner, UKSPF Cyber Security in Business

Why did you choose to enrol on the FREE UK Shared Prosperity Fund Course?

Truthfully, the idea of going back to university was quite daunting as an adult learner, but to work in a STEM role, I need to gain qualifications to help me to get to where I want to be. This free course was only a few weeks long so I thought that this was enough to digest and get me back into education.

Where does your interest in Cyber Security come from?

My last tole was as a telecommunications engineer and support staff member where I worked as an installation engineer fitting various Cisco systems, so I have an interest in this field and it's where I hope my career will take me in the near future.

Describe the key skills you've developed on this short course

I've been able to develop a further understanding of networking and how it plays a key role in cyber security for business. I've enjoyed broadening my knowledge of malware and how systems can exploited, how social engineering plays a huge role in how malware is spread and also the importance of keeping yourself safe from threat actors ("hackers").

You've studied alongside other adult learners. How has this helped you to grow and share experiences?

Some of the adult learners in the class are older and have far more life experience than I do which has been really useful to me. Hearing their experiences has been key to a better understanding of this fast-paced and ever-changing sector. I've learnt so much from my tutor but also from my peers which has been so inspiring,

How has the course helped you think about your future?

The course has given me the confidence and understanding of how university life looks post-pandemic. I am now aiming to study the HNC in Computing from September at NSCG which I can study 2 days per week. I hope then to progress onto the HND.

Where would you like to be in 5 years?

Working in cyber security and in particular Cloud-based systems. I hope to develop my skills further to become a software developer or a role within telecommunications and networking.

What are your top tips for other adult learners looking to study at their local college?

Definitely look out for free courses like the UK Shared Prosperity ones as they give you a foundation to work to. There are lots of courses to choose from so have a chat with the NSCG team and they will help you to find the best course for your career ambitions.
