Jessica Lewer On Climbing The Career Ladder With AAT

JESSICA LEWER ADULT LR

By day, Jessica Lewer works for Stafford-based Moot Group as a Financial Accountant, balancing her full-time job with her AAT Accounting studies at NSCG. We chatted to Jessica to hear all about her studies and how studying part-time helps her to gain the essential industry qualifications to develop a successful career in accounting.

Studying AAT has developed my attention to detail which is a key skill within my job role as I can spot discrepancies and correct them before they become issues.

Jessica Lewer, Level 4 AAT Diploma in Professional Accounting

Why did you decide to study a part-time AAT course at NSCG?

I decided to study at NSCG as an adult learner after I switched from practice to industry as I wanted to continue my AAT journey by studying at Level 4. I had already studied AAT Level 2 and 3 apprenticeships, so this has been a natural progression. AAT is a highly respected, internationally recognised qualification and I hope that having this on my CV will open doors to a wide range of job opportunities.

What attracted you to the world of accounting?

I decided to study Accounting at college when I was choosing between university and an AAT apprenticeship and I've been working towards this professional qualification ever since.

How do you put your college work into practice back in the workplace?

I find the course useful as I can apply the theory learnt into my everyday tasks back in the workplace. Being in a classroom with other learners who are in a similar position to me is great as we get to engage and share real-life experiences from our individual roles.

How do you manage your studies around your day job?

AAT provides clear course structures and deadlines which is really helpful when I really need to organise my study time effectively. I like that the qualifications are broken down into manageable units, so I don't need to study everything at once which has helped me to focus on completing one unit at a time. Achieving small milestones keeps me motivated and has reduced the feeling of being overwhelmed. From an employer point of view and workload planning, I am able to give my employer a clear schedule of my college timetable so that we are able to set realistic targets.

Describe the key skills you've developed so far.

I've really developed my attention to detail which is a key skill and has enabled me to spot discrepancies and correct them before they become issues. I have also learnt to analyse financial data to assess company performance and overall health. I have also become more proficient in calculations, depreciation and VAT.

How do you tutors support you during your studies?

My tutors have helped me to understand complex concepts and break down the AAT curriculum into manageable sections. They provide clear explanations for difficult topics such as financial accounting and management accounting. Having access to past papers and exam strategies has proven to be really useful.

How has studying at NSCG changed you/your life/your career so far?

Studying at NSCG had given me access to a network of professionals and peers, which has provided valuable insights into different areas of the profession. The course at NSCG has brought about a sense of professional achievement. It’s a qualification that is respected by my employers, which has led to greater job satisfaction, recognition, and respect from my colleagues and management.

What’s next for you after you complete the course?

After the course I want to continue my studies with either ACCA or CIMA. In the future chartered status will open doors to senior management positions, including roles like Finance Manager, CFO (Chief Financial Officer), and Finance Director which are my long-term goals.
