Sport and Exercise Science student Ava Doherty crowned champion at Manchester Box Cup
Level 3 Sport and Exercise Science student, Ava Doherty, who boxes out of Stoke Staffs ABC, was crowned champion in her category at the Manchester Box Cup recently.
Nicknamed Ava ‘Diamond’ Doherty, she competed in the 70kg Youth Elite Category, boxing fellow competitor Ellie Newell from Newall’s Boxing Academy. The competition played out at Leigh Sports Village in Manchester, and this was the pairs fourth time meeting competitively- leaving them at a draw with two wins each. Ava had complete control throughout and won the match unanimously on points.
Ava’s Head Coach, Dave Buxton, said: “Ava just keeps getting better and better, she’s a real powerhouse and we are expecting big things from her!”
Ava is on England Boxing's Performance Pathway, which aims to deliver effective and inclusive coaching and opportunities so that every boxer has the chance to fulfil their potential.
Ava will be continuing her season at the prestigious Haringey Box Cup, Europe’s largest amateur boxing event which is taking place on Saturday 15 June at Alexandra Palace in London.
