Stafford College Honours Outstanding Learners at First ‘Student of the Month’ Awards of the Year

Each month Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group hold a ‘Student of the Month’ awards presentation that highlights and recognises the individual effort, progress and dedication of students who go above and beyond throughout the year.
This month saw the first round of nominees for the new academic year collect their awards. September's outstanding winners were selected for a variety of reasons, from standing out in their chosen courses, their inspiring ability to overcome adversity and their commitment to supporting the local community.We want to say a huge thank you to Chris Plant, Deputy Chief Executive of the Staffordshire Chambers of Commerce, for joining us and presenting the awards.
Danny Shermer - Award for the Faculty of Professional Studies
Danny has stood out since starting his Level 3 Information Technology course, showing great enthusiasm and leadership. As Social Media and Marketing Officer for the Students’ Union, he’s already made a positive impact on college life. Outside the classroom, his role as a Sergeant Major with the Army Cadets showcases his dedication, leadership and teamwork. Balancing IT studies, extracurricular activities, and charitable fundraising, Danny is a true all-rounder. His commitment and energy make him a worthy Student of the Month!
Emily Walker - Award for Maths
Emily has impressed her tutors with her resilience and determination to improve her Maths skills. After joining NSCG in 2024, she achieved a D* in Travel and Tourism and made brilliant progress in Maths, moving from grade 2 to 3. In lessons, Emily is engaged, confident, and always eager to participate, setting a great example for her classmates. Her enthusiasm and growing confidence highlight just how far she’s come. Well done Emily, keep up the fantastic work!
Chloe Harris - Award for the Faculty of Academic Studies
Chloe has made an outstanding impact since joining in 2024, excelling academically and taking on multiple leadership roles. She helped lead the first-ever A Level team in the VCCP Intercity Challenge, creating a campaign for Alton Towers, which is now being used live! From her role in the Students’ Union to creating digital content and managing social media, Chloe continues to go above and beyond. With her sights set on studying Marketing at Exeter University, she’s a shining example of ambition and talent.
Jack Lovesey - Apprentice of the Month Award
Jack has made incredible progress in his apprenticeship, completing second-year tasks early and achieving a perfect 100% in his end-of-block exams, a huge leap from 77%. He’s also been recognised nationally, winning the CPA ‘Stars of the Future’ award for 2025. His mentor praises his attitude, skill, and work ethic, describing him as a brilliant engineer with a bright future at Liebherr. Jack’s dedication and talent make him an outstanding apprentice.
Thomas Chatfield - Award for the Faculty of Skills and Technology
Thomas has shown fantastic dedication to his Level 1 Carpentry course, fully engaging in both practical and theory lessons. His precision and attention to detail have shone through, producing exceptional joinery work. His tutor describes him as “exemplary”, a student who works hard, supports others, and takes pride in everything he does. Thomas’s passion and commitment make him a brilliant ambassador for his course.
Poppy-Cerise Howard - Award for the Faculty of the Arts
Poppy has demonstrated extraordinary creativity, academic excellence, and passion for the arts. Achieving top grades on her Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma, she’s now preparing an application to Oxford University. Her mature and ambitious approach to Fine Art is matched by her involvement in college events and arts organisations across the region. From Creative Factory workshops to the Ikon Gallery youth programmes, Poppy goes above and beyond. Her talent and drive are truly inspiring.
Junior Lacey - Award for the Faculty of Vocational Studies
Junior’s journey at NSCG has been nothing short of inspiring. Since joining the Early Years pathway, he’s grown into a confident and engaged student with a passion for working in special needs education. Tutors describe him as a learner with “bags of potential,” who now supports others in class and sets a positive example. His determination and personal growth make this recognition so well deserved.
