Wallaby Sculpture Hops onto Campus as Part of Staffordshire Moorlands Public Art Trail

Leek College is taking part in a unique public art initiative this summer, welcoming a vibrant wallaby sculpture to campus as part an outdoor art trail celebrating the 10th anniversary of Peak Wildlife Park.

WALLABY TRAIL

The trail, organised by OUTSIDE and Peak Wildlife Park in partnership with Wild in Art, features ten colourful wallaby sculptures that have been designed by local artists and community groups and installed in towns, villages and beauty spots across the Staffordshire Moorlands.

The wallaby sculpture on the Leek College campus was co-designed by NSCG art technician and associate lecturer Chris Thompson, who also works as freelance artist, in collaboration with Year 10 students from Westwood College. The group worked together as part of a creative commission that encouraged young people to take an active role in public art, with their final designs proudly displayed on campus for students, staff and visitors to enjoy.

The trail draws inspiration from one of The Nicholson Museum and Art Gallery most curious exhibits, a wallaby once spotted roaming the Staffordshire Moorlands.

Chris Thompson said: “It’s been a fantastic experience working alongside the students from Westwood College and the statue really brings something new and colourful to the Leek College campus. Public art is such a powerful way to spark creativity, encourage collaboration and connect communities, as well as discover local talent.”
