ZOHRA EL MELLALI

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) learner, Zohra El Mellali chats to us about taking the big step and returning to education to improve her to get to grips with English.

Since signing up for the ESOL course, I can speak and understand English much better. I can also help my child more with school work and communicate with their teachers.

Zohra El Mellali, Level 1 and Introduction to Level 2 English for Speakers of Other Languages

Why did you decide to study an ESOL course at NSCG?

I wanted to improve my English to help with everyday life and for when I am talking to people in my community. NSCG is a good college, and I heard many people say it’s friendly and helpful.

What has been the most enjoyable aspect of the course?

I enjoy meeting new people from different countries. Our teacher is extremely kind and always ready to help us.

How did you feel on your first day?

Very nervous but I was happy to be starting a new adventure. Everyone is very nice and making new friend helped me to be more comfortable.

What has been the most challenging part of studying the ESOL programme?

Sometimes it’s hard to understand new grammar especially when people speak fast. But with practice, it gets better. I can ask for help when I need it and talking to others in the class is the best way to learn.

And the best experience so far?

Meeting new people and getting involved in events to show off my heritage such as the ESOL Culture Day.

How has the course changed your life so far?

I feel more confident now. I can speak and understand English better. I can also help my child more with school and speak to teachers which is very important. I am also improving my writing skills.

Are you planning on enrolling on another course?

Yes, I want to keep learning. I am working my way to the Level 2 ESOL course.

What would your advice be for other adult learners who are thinking of studying a part-time course?

Don’t be scared. It’s never too late to learn. You will make friends, learn new things, and feel proud of yourself. Just take the first step!
