Course overview

Advance your engineering skills with our Level 2 Diploma in Engineering Operations. Build a solid foundation across mechanical and electrical disciplines while developing practical competence and confidence. You’ll apply core engineering concepts to real tasks and projects, preparing you for next-step study or entry into industry. As part of the course, you will visit engineering companies to find out more about real-life Engineering in a range of settings. You will also complete a short period of work experience.

The course is made up of practical and theory units designed to give breadth and confidence in engineering practice. You’ll develop workshop skills (e.g. safe hand processes and welding) alongside the essential foundations of electrics (including wiring, testing and underpinning principles). Emphasis is placed on safe systems of work, problem-solving, and applying technical information. English will be studied where required, and learners complete a short period of relevant work experience.

As a condition of being offered a place on this course, you would be expected to meet the following entry requirements:

  • Submit a school report showing your attendance, behaviour and effort details.
  • You will need to achieve/have achieved GCSEs at grade 4 or above in Maths and a grade 3 or above in English Language.

You will complete a range of practical projects and will be assessed and monitored throughout the year. You will also compile a portfolio of work to evidence your learning and progress. Where required, short tests and assignments support the development of English skills.

If you wish to find out more you can contact Nathan Roberts, Curriculum Leader, by emailing nathan.roberts@nscg.ac.uk

After completing the course you will be well prepared to progress into employment with a local company as an engineering apprentice (a suitable placement is required), or onto further full-time Engineering study. Your balanced foundation across mechanical and electrical topics supports routes into manufacturing, maintenance and other technical roles.

This course is free for anyone aged 16 – 18.

College Maintenance Allowance (CMA): Anyone with a gross household income under £35,000 can receive financial support to cover college related costs such as transport, meals, course equipment and uniform.
