This course will provide you with a broad understanding of mechanical, electrical or electronic engineering that will prepare you to study at Level 3 or for employment as an engineering apprentice. You will study a range of core subjects to give you a good grounding in engineering basics including working safely, using and interpreting engineering information and engineering maths. You will also take other subjects to give you a broader understanding of key engineering principles. These may include electrical and mechanical science, engineering materials, understanding a range of engineering processes and other topics. You will continue to improve your Maths and/or English skills in structured lessons alongside your course, and if you plan to progress to a Level 3 course you will need to demonstrate a satisfactory level of improvement in maths and/or English by the end of the year.

You will learn through a lot of different activities across your course. These will include classroom-based learning, completing projects, and learning using specialist equipment in our laboratories and workshops. You will also be expected to complete projects and assignments outside of your main classes.

You will need three GCSEs at grade 3 or above, one of which should include Maths and English. You should also have an interest in engineering and technology.

You will complete a range of projects, assignments, presentations and contextualises English and Maths. These will be assessed as you go through the course so that you know how you are doing. There will be two external assessments throughout the course.

Having successfully completed the course with a merit, you will be well prepared to progress onto a range of further engineering opportunities including higher education, an apprenticeship or employment.

College Maintenance Allowance (CMA): Anyone with a household income under £26,000 can receive up to £20 per week financial support to help pay for travel and meals and meet the costs of essential trips, books, stationery and equipment.
